Affiliate Marketing (Part 2) – How To Get Started + Programs

Welcome back to part two (in a three-part series) all about affiliate marketing.  If you missed part one, read it here.  Today, I’m going to discuss how to get started with affiliate marketing.  There are MANY affiliate companies out there to join, but there are several highly popular in affiliate marketing programs.  Most require you to apply for membership, and then upon approval, you must apply to each individual store or business you would like to post links for.

Do not be discouraged if you are not approved to join individual store affiliate programs. Some stores are extremely picky about who they accept. Move on to the next company, and in a few months, try re-applying to the companies that rejected your application.

What type of blogs can use affiliate marketing?

Most blogs can use affiliate marketing successfully.  Quality posts and original content is key.  You should strive to place links that flow effortlessly within your content, making reader click-thru potential a natural experience. Links tossed into a post with no purpose stand out and will ultimately turn your readers off.  You don’t want that to happen, so only share products that you recommend and enjoy using.

What are some examples of great product/niche affiliate link placements?

  • Food Bloggers: baking tools, supplies, cookbooks
  • Healthy Lifestyle Bloggers: activity trackers, water bottles, workout gear and programs
  • Travel Bloggers: luggage, travel journals, camera equipment, airline/hotel travel booking sites
  • Parenting Bloggers: toys, baby gear, pregnancy and parenting books

Affiliate Marketing Programs

When you are first getting started, you should focus on a specific niche or topic and promote affiliate programs that are related to that market. For instance, you could focus on makeup, fashion or home goods. It’s not a good idea to sign up for a wide range of programs on different topics because you won’t be able to focus your efforts on targeted promotions. So start with a single market, and promote products that relate to that genre.

After you are accepted into an affiliate network by an advertiser, you will have access to text ads and banners for your website.  You will also be able to link most products that the advertiser has available, which allows you to promote individual items.  When someone clicks on the links to make a purchase, you will earn a commission based on the percentage of that particular sale.  Keep in mind that each company has their own commission percentages and guidelines.

Many sellers offer their own affiliate programs directly from their websites while others work through big networks like:

ShareSale  (affiliate link)

Commission Junction

Ebates

Linkshare

Viglink

You can also promote products from large corporations:

Amazon Affiliate Program

Ebay

Groupon

Fashion Based Affiliate Programs:

Shopstyle

RewardStyle

How To Get Started

A good place to start with affiliate links is with the content that you already have. Do you have posts that could easily be edited by mentioning a product that’s available through one of your affiliate networks?  Add in your affiliate links and promote them across your social media channels. This is a good time to add some new life to your older blog posts as well.
